The Lansdowne Community Youth Garden
SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Lansdowne Community Youth Garden and associated summer program educates students about nutrition, food systems, gardening/farming, entrepreneurship and business planning. It challenges them to learn outside “the classroom” while engaging them in real-life examples of the concepts that they learn.
The summer program is an eight-week course that takes place from the beginning of July through the end of August. The course is provided free of charge for all participants, and stipends are also provided. An essential element of these activities is increasing students’ knowledge about nutrition and the mechanics of food systems, including the creation and distribution of food. Drawing from the work of other established organizations with similar missions, the LEDC’s program combines outdoor activity and practical experience in gardening as well as an eight-week curriculum of topics.
A typical day in the life of a summer program participant includes: garden work in the morning from 9 AM until 11:30 AM; an hour break for lunch; and two hours worth of activities and classes. Each week has a theme around which the Garden Coordinator organizes activities with the help of the Youth Garden Advisory Committee.
