Opening Day(s)
OK so, meteorologically speaking, it's still winter. Heavy coats, bitter winds, and forecasts that veer far too close to "wintry mix" territory are still a part of our lives here in Lansdowne. While we do realize how fortunate we are to not find ourselves in the perpetually snow-plagued "northern and western suburbs," it's still unacceptable. It's the last day of March, we're well into daylight savings time, the Phillies are mere hours from starting their regular season, and we're still taking about a chance of snow? Enough already. Just make it end.

Sometime shortly after the Phils kick off their season against the Astros, another Opening Day of sorts takes place here in Lansdowne. Tomorrow night marks the debut of Celebration Theater's The Actor's Nightmare, a play by Christopher Durang that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat and laughing at the same time. Smart, witty and funny, the play tells the story of accountant George Spelvin, who sudenly finds himself on an unknown stage, playing an unknown character, in an unknown play. Adding to George's dilemma, the play seems to shift bewteen scenes from several plays, leaving him questioning his sanity and fearing for his life (!!!) as he attempts to sort out dreams from reality

The Actor's Nightmare will be presented over the first three weekends in April at the Twentieth Century Club (Friday-Saturday-Sunday the first two, Saturday-Sunday only on the final weekend). All performances begin at 7:00 pm, but doors open at 6:30 for cafe and refreshment sales and general mingling and merriment. Tickets are available for $9 per person or at a group rate of 5 for $39.

Who's (Also) On First
So we've established that tomorrow means first performance and first pitch, but a check of the calendar also reveals that its April 1, time for yet another First Friday at Art Space Lansdowne. In an effort to bring as many talented artists to this venue as possible, this month's installment features an eclectic group of talented artists that go by the name of the Nomad Art Group. You won't want to miss this one and only opportunity to see paintings, illustrations, sculpture, photography, quilts and more from these special artists. First Friday runs from 6 to 9 pm, so stop by after the game, or before the show, or whenever you're able to make it!

Dinner and a Movie on the Cheap
There's cheap dates, and then there's really cheap dates, but this one offered by Regency Cafe and Cinema 16:9 truly takes the (cup) cake. For the reasonable sum of $7 (assuming this is a solo "date") you can enjoy dinner at Regency followed by a film at Cinema 16:9. For this special, which will only be offered on Thursday evenings, your $5 Regency dinner gets you a salad, a piece of quiche, and a cupcake; the $2 movie ticket is good for that evening only. As part of this special, Regency will stay open until 6:30 pm.

Power Talkin'
PECO and the Public Utility Commission will present a “Smart Ideas” Energy Seminar at 7:00 pm on April 14 at the Twentieth Century Club. Hosted by Lansdowne Mayor Jayne Young, the program will feature discussion about how to be more energy efficient, explain programs available to PECO customers, and present information about home energy audits. For more information, download this promotional flyer or call 888-5-PECO-SAVE.

Showing Your Love
Remember last summer when we asked you to vote for the Lansdowne Farmers Market in America’s Favorite Farmers Market Contest? (To be honest, we asked, asked again, then pleaded, cajoled, begged, beseeched, nagged, and finally browbeat, so if you’ve forgotten about that, you might want to look into some aids for memory improvement.) You may further recall that the LFM placed second nationally in the category of Boutique Markets, as well as second overall in the state of Pennsylvania, which was not too shabby and a result we will be happy to crow about for years, as we’ve officially sworn off entering any more such contests, since pestering you to vote made us all peevish.

Even better than our high placement were the comments that voters left as to why you thought Lansdowne should win. We didn’t know we’d get to see these remarks, so it was a happy surprise over the winter when we received a spreadsheet detailing the nearly 600 ways you found to express your affection for the Market. So charming were the praises you sang that we created a page at the LFM website devoted to these comments, and we can’t think of a better way to get yourself charged up for opening day, only two months hence, than reading through several hundred of them (they go quick). So go take a look. If you didn’t vote, these comments will make you wish you had. If you did, know that your kind words mean a lot to the people behind the scenes, the vendors, and the borough, and we think nice stuff right back atcha.
– XO, the LFM

Coming from Rachel?

Keep Lansdowne Beautiful Day is just over two weeks away, set for Saturday, April 16. Borough Council environmental committee chair Barbara Silzle and LEDC Main Street Manager Rachel Van Tosh are still welcoming inquiries from folks who want to put some advance planning into their cleanup efforts. Once again, we'll mention that if you roll out of bed that Saturday and want to lend a hand, head to the southeast corner of Baltimore and Lansdowne (next to Borough Hall) at 9:30 am.

Penn Wood Hoops Update
Despite not bringing home a state title, the Penn Wood High School varsity boys basketball team had yet another great run in the PIAA Class AAAA tournament. The Patriots made it all the way to the semifinal round, where they were topped 52-48 by Mt. Lebanon in an overtime thriller. Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and fans on another great season!
