Just when we thought we were about to go through this holiday season in t-shirts and sandals, winter finally delivered! And just in time to add the final sales pitch to the LEDC Holiday Pop-Up Shop, where it was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Sparkly baubles and bangles to hang from the tree…or arms, fingers and necks; warm woolen mittens, and even a few elves to help with the gift wrapping. It was great!
In case you missed it, you really missed it. I’m talking about the old Noel Schmidt Furniture building’s transformation into the new HQ for the LEDC and art incubator. The site is not only well on its way to completion, but the space is jaw-dropping! Much of the past is present… in the marbled flooring, original wooden partitions and most especially the restoration of the huge double hung windows. And more news to come in 2018. Stay tuned!
We still have some 2017 to get through, so let’s not rush the season. Today is the day to check your list…twice… to see what might still be needed to fill out those stockings, or stockpile those last minute hostess gifts that will make you everyone’s favorite guest.
So get yourself to the LEDC December Mini-Market at the Landing, happening this Saturday, from 10 ’til noon! We don’t keep a schedule of vendors for these winter farmers markets, but look for prepared foods, meats and sweets, and maybe just the perfect gift for the person who has everything. Note: I have it on good authority that Kiss My Soul will be there with her scentsational candles…always my favorite go-to gift. But don’t take it from me…you gotta be there to see there.
Don’t forget that the winter markets will take place every 3rd Saturday from January thru April, from 10 ‘til noon, to keep your pantry stocked and your table topped.
And at noon, maybe cross the Ave. to the Icery (open limited hours for December) while there’s still time to order a molto delizioso gelato cake to end your holiday feast.
More stuff:
On my yet-to-do list: a visit to Heffernan’s Little Craft Shop, formerly home to Paddington Station, to welcome our latest entrepreneur, Teresa Heffernan, to town and check out what she has up her creative sleeves.
Just had my first (but not last) batch of crispy chicken wings from Crystal’s Comfort Food (next to the Borough pocket park at Lansdowne and Baltimore. I highly recommend.
Our favorite pastry chef, Kia, is kickin’ it at her new Kia’s Cakes and Cafe…and she’s not all about sweets…word on the block is she makes a mean grilled cheese and other savory items. Open Wednesday through Sunday. ATTENTION SEPTA COMMUTERS: Stop by on your way to the station and place an order for pick-up on your way home.
Whether you’re into Blues or Bossa Nova, Jamey’s House of Music is bringin’ the beat for December. Usher in 2018 with Lansdowne’s own Minas.
If you’ve only got time for a cuppa joe, a juice or a sandwich, whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan, or straight up carnivore, you’ve got options: I Got the Juice, The Regency and the Avenue Deli have something for everyone.
And of course, stay on track by visiting both the LEDC and Lansdowne Borough websites for news you can use, upcoming events, and information.
So, between the rock salt and the first robin, there’s still life happening here in Lansdowne. Don’t miss it. And however you celebrate the season, please accept my wishes for a holiday that’s merry, bright and beautiful.
-Terry Baraldi, Lansdowne, where good friends are always in season!
