Mellow Yellow…

So, yesterday, there they were…the first volley of Honey Crisp apples, wanting to announce the changing of the season.  Ya know what?  I said, “no sir…not today.  Not while the calendar still says summer.  Try again next week.”

I walked right on past over to the peaches…I don’t give up summer without a fight.   And the peaches this year were pretty awesome.  Then on to the melon patch…and there it was…just-right sized for two… round and heavy, and as a text book example of all I knew about picking a ripe melon, this was one for the books.

Except for one last surprise…when I got it home to the kitchen sink and cracked it open…the insides were yellow!  And not just a little yellow…I’m talkin’ buttercup yellow!  Daffodil yellow!  Whoa!   But I wasn’t scared even a little.  The first bite and I was up to my chin in melon wine.  So I learned two things:  This thing was the juiciest, sweetest surprise of the season.  And I’m still young enough to discover new things.

So, did you know that watermelons come in living technicolor?  I did not.  But it turns out that in the watermelon family there are shades of red, pink, green, yellow, white and even rainbow!  Here at the Lansdowne Farmers Market we appreciate diversity wherever we find it,  even in Tucquan Farms produce tent.

I know that soon…very soon…I’ll be all about the apples.  Just give me a moment…

…and we’re back…and by the time you read this, it will be Labor Day weekend, the traditional ‘end of summer’ days and easy livin’.  But that’s not the real reason for the season…or at least the weekend.  Labor Day was instituted to recognize the worker force at the very base of the operation… It’s the working class that gave us 40 hr. work weeks, weekends and holidays, fair wages and safety in the workplace. Here’s to the men and women who make things go, who keep the lights on and the wheels turning.  Next time you hit the light switch, thank an electrician.

It’s also time to say good bye and good luck to all the college kids heading back to the Halls of Academia.  We miss you already.   Keep in touch*

*that means “answer our texts”!

This Saturday is Community Day at the LFM, where our neighbors can set up a table to show off their new local business or hobby or community interest activities and events.

Always held on the last Saturday of each month, Community Day is a great way to get some face time in the community, to trade ideas and build interest.  If this sounds like exposure you need, or want to share, sign up here for one of the remaining days this season. Spaces are limited.

Artists of the Week: Fifth of a Farm…we already know them for their jams, jellies and preserves…now introducing a line of novelty craft pieces…that and a jar of jam…nice holiday hostess gifts.

In the Music Tent:  One of the best…Dave Falcone returns for a reprise.  Easy listening and impossible not to sing along.

Don’t forget to read all of the LEDC Newsletter to see what else is happening for this last third of summer.

See you Saturday,

Terry B.
