Not sure how this happened, but here we are…down to the last two weeks of the 2021 LFM season. I hope you took my advice and spent last week clearing the forgotten and petrified remnants (?!?! ) from the bottom of your freezer. Time to make room, and new resolutions for this year… to never again forget that leftover lasagna, the last serving of beef stew or those green beans you took the trouble to blanche. Well, at least you’ll try.
And now that there’s some recovered space that needs re-filling, these next two weeks’ LFM will be last call* for replenishing from some of your favorite LFM vendors.
So pay attention. And check the LFM schedule to see which vendors will be here when.
Anticipating the first blizzard, I’ve already stocked up on Jon Wilson’s seriously delish soups. And how about some bread to go with? A trip to Big Sky’s booth is all you need to keep your dunking game up to snuff. Tip: I slice up that big ol’ pepperoni loaf before freezing so that I can pull out just enough…OK, maybe just a skosh more than that. A girl gets hungry in December.
Across the way, My House Cookies has at least three kinds of quiche for a fancy brunch or casual supper! And pies! Your hedge against unexpected company, or just because… pie!
Maybe you’ve already turned the last of this year’s tomatoes into sauce (or gravy if you prefer) just waiting for a delivery system. Stop by Vera Pasta and pick one or several shapes, and remember, the “rigate” (ribbed) types are made to carry the maximum payload of sauce from plate to mouth, while the homemade linguini are perfect for lighter clam and marinara sauces.
While we’re here…let’s settle this sauce vs gravy contretemps. It’s a regional thing…if there’s no meat, it’s sauce; but if there’s meat in the mix, it’s gravy, OK? Please don’t argue this with a South Philly nonna… you will lose.
Now that the freezer is potentially packed to the gills, let’s take a look at the pantry. What goes better with snowy Sundays than pancakes made from Deer Creek’s buckwheat mix? And what goes better with pancakes than real maple syrup from Ridge Valley Maple? Plus, you might also want to be prepared with several bags of the most addictive party mix ever to have on hand for last-minute get-togethers or hostess gifts. And even if you don’t have a root cellar…who does these days?… you can squirrel away a few squash varieties to keep until you remember you have them. (Also good with aforementioned maple syrup.)
And don’t forget our always fun Thanksgiving Market, Saturday before THE DAY (November 20th)! Although we don’t yet have a confirmed schedule of who will be there, all of our vendors are invited to set up camp. So be sure to check back ahead of time… and make a list!
*Our abbreviated winter schedule will begin on Dec 18th, and continue on each 3rd Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon, from January thru April. Mark your calendars.
And read the rest of this LEDC newsletter for upcoming events and information.
Only two markets left. Make the most of them. Winter is coming. You’ve been warned.
