Let me put it right out there…Summer is my drug of choice.
Sure, there are lots of things to love about Fall. There’s that new energy that creeps in…whether it’s the crisp days and chilly nights, or that you can finally wear that sweater you feel so good in. The crunchy new palette of crimson and gold covers faded garden beds. Walking somewhere starts to sound like a good idea. But it also means having to actually wear that sweater…and put on socks…and shoes with tops.
It also means endings…like this one, when the Lansdowne Farmers Market folds its red umbrellas for another season. Especially after these last two summers, I’m more than ever sad to see it end. Even in its reduced and cautious footprint, these Saturday markets were an antidote to the enforced isolation that was the winter of 2021. Will this next one be cozy…or claustrophobic? Remember back to Memorial Day? Seeing actual lips and noses made us absolutely giddy with relief…and optimism that carrying on with our Market was the right thing to do…even with the new challenges that came with COVID.
So, our thanks to the LEDC team that refused to go quietly…and to vendors who coped with new and unexpected challenges to bringing products to market.
We don’t know what next year will bring…only that there will be a next year. So I guess that’s as good a reason as any to enjoy what’s left of this one. Like…
Halloween! If you’re harboring a few young masked marauders in your house, be sure to bring them to this Saturday’s Market, where the vendors will have treats for the little ones. Then walk right over to The Landing where Mayor Tony’s Trick or Treat Party will be held at NOON! All adults must be accompanied by a kid.
BTW: Have you noticed what’s been happening to Lansdowne lawns and porches? Moaning and groaning with more ghosts and goblins and whole covens of witches. We’ve come a long scary way from the candle-lit jack-o-lanterns of my childhood. But if there are Reeses Cups in the offing, ghouls be gone! Some things don’t change.
And our annual Thanksgiving Market will be next month, Sat. Nov 20, from 9am – 1pm, just ahead of the big day. We don’t yet know which vendors will be there, but ALL are invited to set up their tents. So look for the LEDC newsletter ahead of the day…and make a list! Then make a feast! After last year’s lonely table-for-two gatherings…we’ll make room for that crazy aunt or grumpy uncle, and just give thanks for one another!
Winter markets will be 10 – Noon on the 3rd Saturday of each month, December thru April.
Sothere is still joy and friendship to be had even as my favorite season ends…but this is my last letter of the year, so I want to wish each and everyone reading this, and to all the people they love, a calmer, cozier winter ahead. Burn a candle, light a window for us to see. Even in the dark, we are a community.
’Til next year,
Terry Baraldi
