…How HOT was it? It was so hot even the cucumber wasn’t cool. badumbump. I’m here all summer, folks.
But there was iced coffee and cool drinks and a couple slices of shade, and another Lansdowne Farmers Market was underway. Because people gotta eat. And still beat the heat.
And lucky for everyone, here at the LFM we were ready for Mother Nature’s oven…because we know that one of the best ways to get cool is to eat HOT…like Taste of Puebla’s salsas (rosa y verde), or pico de gallo. Or Pickle Monsters Hot Sauce. Maybe pop a small but mighty jalapeño from one of our three produce tables. Or even a bowl of Wilson’s Curiously Good Chili. So chill out, Mama Nature. We gotcha. And we’ll be ready this week, too. Let’s see what Fayia’s hot sauces can bring to the party.
Speaking of this week‘s coming attractions, I have it on good authority (Sean of GreenHorn Gardens) that the honeydews are reaching their fighting weight…so look for them this weekend at the Owen Ave end of the line. And if they’re anything like last week’s cantaloupes, buy two. Nerd factoid: No one seems to know exactly who grew the first honeydew, but, no matter his current fame or infamy, we can thank Christopher Columbus for bringing the first magical seeds to the New World.
Took a chance on Planted Kitchen’s Orange Sauce a couple of weeks ago, and discovered a quick new way to add a little sumpin’ sumpin’ to a pasta salad, and to a ricotta filling for those bite-sized red, green and yellow peppers. Next up is the Pink Sauce. Possibly a smash-up with some cheese from Amazing Acres Goat Dairy? Will report back.
All of the flavors that say Summer are at their very best right now…sweet corn and firm ripe peaches and blueberries and TOMATOES! OMG the tomatoes! So many love apples and so little time to eat them all. All season long my husband and I bliss out regularly on BLTs and fried ripe tomatoes in milk gravy…his mom’s recipe. Rustic pizza, layering thin slices onto a great loaf of bread smeared with pesto and cheese and broiled til it bubbles. Serve hot with something cold.
BTW: Your tastebuds aren’t the only thing needing to be fed and watered. This heat is doing a number on your body’s largest organ…YOUR SKIN. This week, pay a visit to Tammy’s Body Butters…something for every age, gender and skin color. Tammy is only here every 4th Saturday so don’t miss your chance this week to see what she’s about.
And check out the Artists’ Tent…so glad they’re back. This week is the very crafty Karen Heenan.
Which brings me to a final tip: If you have a favorite vendor or artist, please ask them what their LFM schedule is, or how to contact them directly, so that you can be sure to stay stocked up. You can find their info on our LFM website. They love hearing from you.
And I love seeing you at the LFM!
