The Day the Music almost Died

Those of you who were at the LFM last Saturday may or may not have noticed, but less than two hours in, the Landing and the entire block of shops lost power.  That included our itinerant musician, who had traveled from Coatesville to entertain us.  Tragedy?  Nope…because Hot Knives Paul, our resident man with the whetstone, came to the rescue with a small and very quiet generator and …cue the music!   And THAT is what living in a community is about…how / what can we do to help the other guy…with or without recognition.

But we’re BIG on recognizing our peeps…So, thank you to Paul. And BTW, seamstresses, help is on the horizon!   Paul is hoping to have his new SCISSORS sharpener in the lineup by this coming week!   Just remember what mother said: No running with scissors!…but do get to his tent.

Meanwhile, back at the produce tent…Remember last week I was wondering about those yummy red peaches?  So I asked Farmer Dan what variety they were…but he didn’t know.  Huh?  Turns out that Dan doesn’t grow all of what you see on his table…because Dan collaborates.  Farmers grow what crops work best on the land they work, and then buy or barter for what doesn’t.  So the orchard man and the flatland farmer and the egg and dairy man each can get their crops to a wider crop of customers.  And that’s how we get peaches to Lansdowne.  Now you know.

Dan did tell me that the orchard man told him that the extreme heat this month has ripened this year’s peaches almost before they can get them off the trees…and each one so far has been, well…peachy.

On to the corn crop…and melons are coming right behind.  Tomatoes are hitting their stride…along with cherries, sweet and sour.  See what else.  You’re gonna need a bigger basket.

For those of you who enjoy a grown-up summer libation now and then, Pennsylvania Distillers might have just the thing.  Why not treat yourself to a nice gin or vodka, stop by Dan’s tent, grab a cucumber and a bunch of basil and put ‘em all together for a week to make nice.  Then enjoy the best gimlet E.V.E.R.

By the time you are reading this, another 4th of July has come and gone…and summer is officially under way.  I hope that you found some time to appreciate the spirit of the holiday, and all the traditions that make yours special.  Just a guess, but does whipped cream play a role?  berries? potato salad?  Maybe a visit to Meetz by Meez BBQ could help you keep the party goin’ through the weekend.   And any leftover whipped or ice cream would look real pretty sitting on a slice of Aunt Verlea’s pound cake.  But with or without a holiday, there’s LOTS of summer ahead…time to let someone else do the cookin’ for a spell.

In the Music Tent:  the LFM welcomes another Lansdowne Independence Day tradition:  Mansfield Brass!  Dig out your Sousa shoes and get ready to oompah!

Be sure to read ALL of this week’s LEDC newsletter to see what else is coming up on the Avenue and surrounds.  If you see something interesting, get involved.

Speaking of getting involved, I’d like to welcome Cassie Knox and Jennifer Seldon to the tent as part of our weekly LFM team.  They’re finding out first-hand what a fun group we are.   Don’t be jealous…stop by the Tent and find out how you can join in the good times…a little or a lot.

See you Saturday!
