What’s cookin’…besides you?

As I sit down to type, I’m wishing that my brain were feeling as sharp as the knives (very) that Hot Knives Paul* honed for me yesterday.  Instead, I feel like it’s melting.  In case you hadn’t noticed…It’s HOT!         *and yes, Paul can now sharpen your shears.

But life goes on…farmers gotta farm and people gotta eat…so we were right where we said we’d be at last week’s LFM.  And people came.  We were soooo happy to see you!   We’re sorry if the vendor you were counting on wasn’t there…but given these extreme conditions allowances have to be made for both people and product.  We may sell stuff, but people are still our most important commodity.

Farmer Dan’s and the Tucquan tent were right where you left them last time…and will be there again next week, promising cantaloupe!  That must mean that we’re already half-past July.  And can watermelon be far behind?  You can check the PA chart, but it does look like the heat has pushed the ripening process into early overdrive.  So stay awake!

There’s still time to grab some blueberries, fingers crossed for some late black raspberries, still some cherries and all those peaches!   All of which calls to mind the age-old question: Cobblers, Crisps, & Crumbleswhat’s the difference?   Sure, you can click on that link…but unless you’ve brought some of those gems home with you…all you can do is drool.

And if you have a family favorite sure-to-please recipe…please share it with me at the marketing tent.

If sweets aren’t your thing, I can tell you that the beets are the bomb.  Roasted, buttered and seasoned, or pickled with some vinegar and whatever you’ve got in your spice rack.  Sure, your kitchen will look like a CSI episode, but it’ll be worth it.

The tomatoes are coming in bigger and better each week.  In BLTs, salads, or sautéed and served with milk gravy…you choose.

We welcomed a new vendor last Saturday…the very personable Jesse and his Nutty Novelties,  nut based spreads without all the chemicals but with some surprising flavors, hot to sweet to savory.  They will be here again on July 27th, so be sure and stop by their tent. I brought home some cinnamon almond butter that I’ll be busy thinking up ways to enjoy even before apples are in season.   We hope they’ll become a popular addition to our midway.

And speaking of our midway, a reminder that some BIG changes are coming for the 2025 season…Our Landing will be getting a much deserved makeover…probably before the final weeks of 2024.  The Market will continue throughout…but likely at a temporary location.  So stay tuned for further updates.

You may have noticed, food vending, especially ready-to-eat or take home, has certainly changed in the last few years.  We have been happy to see new tents pop up with a whole new constellation of good eats and sweets, from empanadas to barbecue to healthy fruit drinks, from salads to salsas to cinnamon buns.  We’re pleased to see our customers support them and enjoy them! And because we value not only the products sold, but the equally important sense of community and friendship that comes together in this space, it is our hope and our mission to carry it into the new space.   And to continue to enjoy you as part of the equation…as a customer, as a volunteer, and as part of this diverse community.  We love our peeps.

In the Music Tent:   He’s BACK!  LaGressa Cross and G3Soul.   Hotter than the weather!  This man sings soul like he invented it!   California’s loss…Lansdowne’s gain.  Don’t miss this.

Last word:…Be sure to read all of this LEDC newsletter.  Enough said.
